What is a laminar air flow cabinet used for?
A laminar air flow cabinet provides a particle free work area by passing HEPA filtered air across the working surface in a smooth, unidirectional flow. It is used for aseptic handling, media plating, plant tissue culture, electronics assembly and any application where the sample must be protected from airborne contamination.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical laminar air flow?
In a horizontal unit, filtered air flows from the rear of the cabinet toward the operator, giving an unobstructed work surface. In a vertical unit, air flows downward from the top, which suits taller equipment and reduces cross contamination between items placed on the work surface.
Does a laminar air flow cabinet protect the operator?
No. This is the most important limitation to understand. A laminar air flow cabinet directs filtered air across the sample and outward toward the operator, so it protects the product only. For any work involving infectious or hazardous biological material you need a biological safety cabinet instead.
How do I choose the right size?
