What is a biological safety cabinet used for?
A biological safety cabinet provides containment when working with biological agents. Depending on class, it protects the operator, the sample and the surrounding environment through HEPA filtration and controlled airflow. It is standard equipment in microbiology, clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories.
What is the difference between a biological safety cabinet and a laminar air flow cabinet?
This is the most consequential distinction in laboratory clean air equipment. A laminar air flow cabinet protects the product only, by blowing filtered air across the work area and outward toward the operator. A biological safety cabinet protects the operator as well, through containment airflow and exhaust filtration. Never use a laminar air flow cabinet for infectious material.
Which class of biological safety cabinet do I need?
Class selection depends on the biological risk group of your material and whether volatile chemicals are involved. Class II cabinets cover most microbiology and clinical work. Describe your application when you enquire and we will advise on the appropriate specification.
Where should a biological safety cabinet be installed?
Away from doorways, high traffic routes and air conditioning outlets, since air currents disrupt the containment barrier. Allow clearance above the cabinet for filter access. Share your room layout at enquiry stage and we can advise on siting.
