What does a fume hood do?
A fume hood protects the operator from hazardous vapours, fumes and particulates by drawing contaminated air away from the working position and exhausting or filtering it. It is essential equipment wherever volatile chemicals, solvents or reactive compounds are handled.
What is the difference between a ducted and a ductless fume hood?
A ducted hood exhausts contaminated air outside the building, which suits a wide range of chemicals and higher volumes. A ductless hood filters the air and recirculates it into the room, which allows flexible placement but restricts the chemicals that can be used and requires filter monitoring and replacement.
How do I know which type I need?
It depends on the chemicals you handle, the volumes involved, and whether external ducting is possible from your location. Send your chemical list and building constraints through our enquiry form and we will advise.
Can a fume hood be used for biological work?
No. A fume hood is designed for chemical vapour containment, not biological containment, and standard chemical fume hoods do not provide the HEPA filtration required for biological agents. For biological work use a biological safety cabinet.
